Driver Mike Looney meeting fans on track prior to raceOctober 16, 2016 Leading Lee Pulliam late in race
After a successful regular season run resulting in two wins at Motor Mile Speedway near Dublin, Va., the team rolled into Martinsville Speedway for the largest late model race of the year. During practice, the Martin team with driver Mike Looney posted the fastest laps of all the entries.
On Saturday, October 15, driving the 87 Va. entry, Mike won the pole position over some of the best late model drivers in the country.
On Sunday, October 16, 2016, Mike led the field to the green flag and stayed in front for much of the race. During some very hard racing with 5 laps to go, Lee Pulliam slipped inside of the 87 between turns 3 and 4, slid up into Mike causing Pulliam's car to climb up the left rear quarter panel. The Pulliam car came back down onto the track and somehow Mike was able to maintain control and drove the remaining laps to the checkered flag. Pulliam finished second.
The team took home the first place prize money of $25,000 as well as the $1,000 pole winning check, and the beautiful grandfather clock that Martinsville Speedway is known for awarding to all race winners.
Up until now, this ranks as the biggest win for the team. Looking forward to even better things in the future............
